Every morning when I get dressed, I feel like my outfit is a picture I’m painting. It’s so important to love what you wear and let your clothes show off your personality.
There are certain tricks you can use when you know your body type and understand what suits your type. For example, I’m a petite 5’1” woman with a short torso and long legs. I know to wear wide-legged jeans with a tucked-in shirt because it makes my legs look longer.
Knowing your body type can help you choose looks that flatter your figure and highlight your best features. Watching styling videos is a great way to see how experts style your specific body type. I also recommend following people on social media who have your body type.
I always say that my style changes based on my mood. Some days I stick to gym clothes and other days I feel more adventurous. Currently I love the “old money style” that’s trending, which basically means you look like someone from The Parent Trap.
Getting on Pinterest and exploring different styles can help you identify the ones you like, and it takes experimentation to figure out what styles you actually like to wear and which ones make you feel confident.
Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone! I love using Nuuly, a clothing rental program, to try different styles before I commit to them.
Focus on finding clothes that fit, feel great to wear, and make you feel confident. Don’t focus on sizes, because sizes fluctuate based on where you shop and our bodies fluctuate. I love to go to Nordstrom and work with their stylists to help me find clothes that fit my body really well.
I also love having great-fitting blazers in my wardrobe, and Express is my favorite place to shop for those.
To learn how to choose colors that suit you, take a color wheel test. I found out I’m a “spring” on the color wheel test, which means that my best colors are lavender, yellow, and green. I’ve noticed that I get the most compliments when I wear those colors, which is another great way to learn which colors look best on you.
If you aren’t sure where to start, try creating a capsule wardrobe first. It will teach you how to mix and match basic pieces with statement pieces, and you’ll be surprised by the amount of outfits you can put together from the same pieces. Make sure you include a few colorful pieces in your capsule wardrobe instead of only including neutrals. I get the most compliments when I wear color, and it makes me feel more confident because I stand out!
I love affordable fashion and get a ton of my clothes on Amazon, but I also love having a few quality pieces in my closet. Higher-quality pieces tend to fit better and last longer, which helps you feel more confident in them.
I think everyone should have high-quality jeans, a handbag, a trench coat, a neutral dress, and comfortable heels. My favorite heels are from Dolce Vita.
Feeling uncomfortable in your clothes is the worst feeling. I wear dresses almost every day because they feel the most comfortable to me. Find what your comfort piece is and invest in those. When you feel comfortable, you feel more confident.
Speaking of comfort, I love investing in high-quality pajamas from Cozy Earth. Use discount code [inset code] to get your own. I also love the Joyspun brand at Walmart, which are more affordable and still extremely comfortable.
What you put on your body expresses your personality, and I think it’s important to express yourself and wear whatever you want. I love wearing pink and will probably still wear it when I’m 70 years old. Yes, there are trends that I jump on because I love them, but I prioritize wearing what I love regardless of the trends that come and go.
Keeping up with your grooming goes a long way in boosting your confidence. You don’t have to spend a ton of money on it or do it all. I don’t wear eyelash extensions anymore, but I do wear hair extensions because they make me feel more confident. Find what works for you and keep up with it. I also recommend establishing a three to five-minute makeup routine that’s easy to do and makes you feel great.
A gold necklace can turn a tee from grungy to high-class. Experiment with accessories because they can completely change your look, and you don’t have to spend a ton of money on them. I always say that a pair of gold hoops can work wonders! Even when I’m in workout clothes, having my gold hoops in makes me feel put together and more confident.
Review the Transcript:
Hello. Hello. Welcome back. We are diving in today and we’re going to chat about how to find clothes that help you feel more confident. So a lot of times I get asked like, how do you wear that? Are you really wearing that? I’m trying to think of some other ones that I get. Why do you always look so cute?
Why are you always dressed up? How do I wear more color? I want more color in my wardrobe. All these questions I get asked on either a daily or weekly basis. Someone’s commenting on my outfits and how I look. And over on my A Braided Blonde account, obviously, I do a lot of fashion funds and things like that, but.
It’s something that’s developed over time, like the style, the fit and the comfort. Those are really three things I’m looking for, but it can help you boost your confidence, just dressing or knowing how to dress and how to pick out outfits. And so I’m going to give you all the tools today on how to just feel your best and dress the best.
Your most confident self. So first of all, you just need to definitely know your body type. I am very petite. I’m 5’1 I always say I’m 5’1 and 3 fourths. But you want to know what your body type is. I know that I’m petite, so there’s not there’s certain things and tricks that I know how to do for my body type.
But if you understand your body type, it can really help guide you with choosing clothes that really help flatter your figure and it can highlight some of your best features. So the way my body type is shaped, um, I have a short torso, long legs, and I know to wear wide leg jeans and a pant with a tucked in shirt.
And that’s going to make my legs look longer. And so just knowing how to style one thing you can do once you figure out what your body type is, and you can identify that maybe you’re pear shaped, or petite, or maybe you’re tall, like whatever your body type is, you can go to YouTube and look up how to style that body type.
And people, there’s stylists on there that will give you all these options. So I’ve watched many, many, many, many styling videos to kind of figure out what works best with my body type. So there’s definitely one thing that you can do. You want to experiment with different styles. So, it’s so funny. My style like changes with my mood.
So one day I’ll want to wear, you know, tennis shoes and gym shorts and a t shirt like this. Typical moms do. And then I also like to play around with different styles. Like there’s a style right now that’s out called old money style. It’s old money fashion. And basically you just look like someone from the parent trap.
It’s been a favorite here lately, and it’s definitely a trend. So look up old money aesthetic or old money style on Pinterest, and you’ll get a lot of different options there, but there’s two things you want to look for. You want to make sure you’re comfortable. But you feel really confident in it. So for me, I had two kids and like my stomach area, I just, I don’t like things tighter on my stomach area.
I want it to be just a little bit more flattering. So that is why I choose, you know, tops that might be a little bit looser, but just like, don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. Typically I do a ton of shopping on Amazon. Like I’m sure most people do now. It’s just very easy and convenient, but one trick is to follow people with your body type on social media.
So if you’re petite, obviously come follow me. I’m five one and I share a lot of fun petite funds, but finding an influencer that is like a style influencer with your body type can really, really help you, just find like new items and new clothes and things. Just try something new. I love Amazon. I love affordable fashion.
I’ve loved affordable fashion for years. But here recently, I want to try some of the nicer pieces. Like, if you love Free People and Anthropologie and all those really awesome brands, just a little bit more on the expensive luxury side, you have to check out Nuuly. This isn’t an ad for Nuuly. This is just something me and all my friends use.
I was talking to the moms about it yesterday at Skate Night. You pay around like a hundred dollars, and then you can rent six dresses, six really nice dresses. And I love it if you’re like going to an event or something, you just throw it on and typically when you wear something that stands out like a couple times, unless you can mix and match the pieces, if it’s like a dress, for example, you’ll typically only want to wear that a few times.
Um, so you get to just rent it and then send it back. But if it’s new and it’s something that you love. You can actually keep it. So all my best friends do it. All my mom friends. It’s very popular right now. It’s called N U U L Y newly. So definitely look that up. And this will help you get out of your comfort zone and just try new styles.
Like if you want to try the barrel jeans, but you’re not really sure if it’s going to fit you or your body type. Newly is really great option. Cause you can just try it on and you don’t have to spend like. Hundreds of dollars. Sometimes I will like go to Nordstrom and try things on. But I don’t have a ton of time for that.
Cause I’m a mom. I will say there’s sometimes that you need to go to Nordstrom and really speak with a stylist with your buying jeans. I tell everyone by like two pairs of jeans, three pairs of jeans that you absolutely love invest in that. And we’ll chat about investing in quality pieces in a second.
But. Um, Nordstrom, I will go and do like, definitely during Nordstrom sale in the fall, when I’m looking for like super comfortable boots, or I’m looking for like staple pieces, I’ll go to Nordstrom, speak with a stylist and have her or him help, help style me that way and find really comfortable boots.
Like, quality pieces. Now, if I’m buying expensive, workout gear, I like to go in Lululemon and try it on so I can see how it fits my body type. And their sizing can be a little bit different, so you don’t want to be, like, super obsessed with the number because typically, you know, I can range from like a 2 to a 4, I’m a size 8.
So I really try to not look at those numbers. They don’t matter. You just want something that fits and looks good for you. Um, so definitely don’t get wrapped up in numbers. I’m small. Sometimes I’m a small, sometimes a medium, sometimes a large, depends on how, the brand is like fitting and how it runs, but don’t get, you just want something that fits and looks good on you.
Those numbers do not matter. You want to choose colors that suit you. So I don’t know if you’ve heard of this, but there’s something called a color test or color wheel test. It’s a really cool thing that they’re doing. I actually, I’ve been told through other people what my color is. So it’s, I’m a spring, color on the color wheel.
So if you can find a color test and figure out what your colors are, you can then go to Pinterest and it will tell you the best colors to wear. So for my skin tone and my hair and my eye color, my colors are like lavender and yellow and green. So definitely check out getting a color test. I think it’s like a color analysis that people can come and do that, but certain colors can enhance your skin tone and make you appear more vibrant.
So just try to experiment with different color palettes to find what you feel best. Also, you’ll start to notice people will compliment you a ton in that color. So for me, knowing what my colors are, my colors are springtime colors, so like yellow, greens, and purples. I’ll, obviously I love pink, so I’ll want pink to be it, but I don’t get as many compliments in pink as I do yellow, greens, and also like, it’s like a light tan, color.
But just start to notice if someone is constantly complimenting you in a certain color, that’s probably your color. So you want to focus on that. And I know everybody’s obsessed with neutrals right now and I get it. Like it’s very easy to style and I have a ton of neutrals in my closet, but there’s something about wearing color.
I challenge you to definitely try some color this spring, definitely during the summer. Just, just try it. Don’t, you don’t want to just constantly stay in neutrals. I don’t get a ton of compliments in neutrals. I get more color compliments in color and I just feel like it makes you stand out and helps you feel more confident So you definitely want to focus On the fit the fit is super important so ill fitting clothes can be a major confidence killer I hate when clothes are too small and I hate when clothes are too big.
They’re too big. You just feel bad baggy, you don’t feel confident. So you want to make sure you’re getting the right fit. This is something people do. They, you know, they get a stylist and they get, that’s what it’s all about. Making sure you get the right fit. So you want to make sure your clothes fit well and they accentuate your body in a right way that makes you feel good about yourself.
That kind of goes back with the body type, figure out what your body type is. Just some off the bat things you want to be careful of, um, especially for a petite girl is you don’t want, if you’re wearing cross body bag, you don’t want it to be past your hips. So you don’t want it to be too dragging on your legs.
If you have jeans, you don’t want them to drag the floor. You don’t want maxi dresses to drop the floor. Those are big things. As a petite girl, I will have a belt and my belt will help lift up that fabric if something’s too long. For a petite girl, if I am in jeans, okay, like wildlife jeans, I have to have some type of platform with them, or I’m just going to look super baggy.
But if you’re a tall, you know, maybe you want some tennis shoes with your wide leg jeans. Like wide leg jeans would look great on you with tennis shoes. You probably don’t need the heels. So play around with different things. If you don’t even know where to start, I would say try to make a capsule wardrobe.
Capsule wardrobes are amazing. You can literally type in spring capsule wardrobe. and it will help you get basics and then statement pieces and you can mix and match things. Typically there’s like a ton of neutrals in it. So try to get some pops of color in there when you can. If you don’t even know where to start in your closet, I always tell people the same thing every time.
Create a capsule wardrobe for everyday things and then have a few Dresses for events. So I like wearing like staple pieces throughout the week. Maybe it’s a tennis dress Maybe it’s some high waisted shorts lululemon shorts, Leggings like things like that. I like to wear during the week overalls.
There’s some really cute overalls right now on amazon But on the weekends or big events, I love being in a floral dress a bright dress like if it’s an event You’re gonna see me Standing out because I want To be in the reds in the Prints in the florals. It’s just so funny. Chris is like, are you gonna wear that?
There’s like, typically he never says anything, but it’s so funny. I always respond with, yeah. And he’s like, you’re really gonna stand out. I was like, that’s the point. Like, that’s the goal. We want to stand out. We don’t want to fit in. Like, that’s what’s gonna make us super confident. I know I have a hot plink pink blazer.
Having blazers are amazing for confidence, and you can pair them with jeans. If you’re going to a conference, you can pair them. Now they’re like make blazer and shorts that go together. I would say a white blazer and then a colorful blazer. I have a pantsuit set that’s red. That’s good stuff. Every time I wear it, it’s like the boss babe pantsuit and I have a pink pantsuit.
Obviously that I shot for the, the cover of this podcast, but get a good black and white blazer. I do have a black and white blazer that I wear quite a bit. But you just want it to fit good. Express is one of my favorite places to shop blazers. Um, they just have really good professional wear, but you just want it to be comfortable.
So really focus on that fit, making sure clothes are fitting you well in the right way so that you can feel good about yourself. Also investing in quality pieces. So if you like have quality clothes, they tend to fit better and last longer, which can help with your confidence. And I know like Not everyone has the money to spend on like 400 pair of jeans and I totally understand that but there’s just some key wardrobe staples that I feel like everyone If they have the the cash to invest a little bit more because you’re going to wear them more So like a really comfortable good pair of heels Is one I have some dulce vita ones.
They’re so comfortable They’re like the block heel with the braid strap and you can wear it with dresses. You can wear it with jeans You can wear it with so many things So I would say definitely as far as investment goes I would invest in good shoes You And I would also invest in good, like a really nice, good handbag.
Now Amazon is stepping up the game for sure, but like a brown leather handbag or a black leather handbag taupe one, I have a designer, just small cross body neutral bag and it’s, I’ve worn that thing like I have gotten more use out of that than I have, like. The cheaper purses and I don’t know everybody has money for luxury things, but Just finding like good quality things like purse or shoes or another good quality item is jeans.
Spending a little bit more on jeans that fit just right. Because you’re going to wear jeans, you know, with a blazer. You’re going to wear jeans with a basic top. You’re going to wear jeans with sneakers. And then heels for this and that. So definitely jeans. A nice, like, trench coat is a good one too. So just be thinking of that.
Even just like a neutral dress, that maybe is for people a little bit more, that fits just right, that you absolutely love. That you can mix and match with different things. Just think about that. Also just like a really good pair of slacks. For work, if you have to go into work, I would definitely suggest that to help build your confidence.
So definitely consider comfort. There’s just the worst feeling ever is just being very uncomfortable in your clothes. A lot of people ask me, I’m typically in a dress every day. And everybody’s like, where are you going? Why are you so dressed up? Why are you in a dress? Dresses are just really comfortable for me.
They feel like pajamas to me. I don’t know why, but like, especially if it’s like a long sleeve flowy dress, I just feel so comfortable in that. But that might not be your comfort item, right? I just love being in a dress. So you want to definitely, you know, Be comfortable. That’s why I kind of stress the jeans being comfortable thing.
One item you don’t want to be uncomfortable in is pajamas. I do, as far as investing in quality pieces, I do buy cozy earth pajamas. I do believe I have a code with them. So if you check out my link in bio on my Instagram at a braided blonde, you can get a code with them, but they are bamboo pajamas. I have, I wear them every night and they last a really long time.
They’re stretchy, they’re breathable, they’re cool. And when I slip in those pajamas, I just feel so good. I also have bamboo sheets. I feel like you should, everyone should invest in bamboo sheets too. That’s a whole thing, but I work really, really hard. So I’m going to feel good at night. If you want a better price point, pajamas that feel really good.
There’s a brand called joy spun at Walmart and it’s amazing. They’re only 16 and they feel, they feel very similar to bamboo. They’re not as cool, but the material is extremely soft and. I’m obsessed with them. They’re a very great alternative option, but definitely you just want to be comfortable. Like you want to have leggings that stay up if you’re working out.
I don’t know about y’all, but I want leggings with compression and I want leggings, like I want them high, like I want them to sit up high and I want them to stay high. So I’m going to, spend a little bit more on leggings that fit good. I do really love Lululemon. Amazon is honestly coming out with some good things right now, but just make sure they stay up.
Like, you want to be comfortable. Choose fabrics that you, that you feel good in, that matches your style, helps you move freely. I think that’s why I love dresses. Don’t be scared to wear a flowy dress. Like I wear one all the time and I get so many compliments. Everyone needs a pretty flowy dress and a skirt in their closet, like a floral skirt, especially this time of year.
I definitely, definitely recommend that. So, you want to express your personality. Your clothing is a form of self expression and people don’t think about that. What you put on your body shows your personality. So you definitely want to remember that and you definitely want to stand out. And so my personality, who I am, I am very like sunny and bright and fun and that’s who I am.
So I’m going to wear the yellows, the bright colors, I try to be a neutral girly, and I still wear neutral sometimes. But that’s just not my personality, and it feels like, it feels like art to me. Every time I put an outfit together, it’s a masterpiece. It’s a piece of art. It’s not something that I just wear.
And it’s not about being materialistic, it’s about expressing yourself. How do you want people to think about your personality, right? Also, it builds trust. So, I’m not saying that every day you have to look completely different. You know, I am very girly, but you don’t have to look super put together every day, like picture perfect.
I’m not saying that, but if you look good and presentable, people are going to trust you more. And in turn, you’re going to be more successful. I’ve heard that in a ton of different podcasts and things out there about how When you dress yourself, it, it really is a form of self expression. So you want to choose pieces that reflect that personality and make you feel like yourself.
You know, I really feel like myself when I’m in pink and so I’m going to wear it. And it’s on my vision board this year to wear whatever I want. And honey, let me just say, I am wearing whatever I want. And you need to do the same. You need to wear whatever you want. That makes you feel confident. And if you, if you decide you want to change up your style, like if you decide, you know, I’m going to change things up.
Instead of being like, A preppy style. I’m going to do more minimalistic style or vice versa. Do whatever you want. My style changes all the time. It’s so funny. I’m like, okay, I think this week we’re going to do old money. Next week we’re going to do pink girly things and preppy style. It doesn’t matter.
You just, Express your personality and you wear what you want. And on my vision board this year, I promised myself I’d wear whatever I wanted. And let me tell you, it feels so good. I’ve gotten more compliments. I’ve been the happiest I’ve ever been. I’m 34 and I do not care. I will shop in juniors. I will shop in adult.
I will wear black. I will wear pink. I will wear whatever I want. So I really suggest you do the same. It is freeing. It feels good. Because like who said I have to wear neutrals? Like I want to wear pink, you know? And I feel like when I’m 70, I’ll probably wear pink. Honestly, if I want to, it’s all about what I want to do anyways.
I don’t dress for everyone else or what everyone else is doing. Yes. There are trends that I like to hop on if I want to hop on them. Not because everyone else is wearing that. Um, so definitely that’s my little tip for you is to. wear pieces that just reflect your personality. Just pay it when it comes to like confidence, pay attention to your grooming.
So, you know, how you do your make, like if you put makeup on, so obviously you don’t want to be in like this. And this is just my personal preference. Find a makeup routine that’s like, Three to five minutes if you can on days that you you know Just want to wear leggings and want to be casual. You don’t have to do like the full full blown thing but grooming does Like your grooming Is important as far as like your overall look and aesthetic And I don’t think you have to spend a lot of money or time on this and everybody gets different things You don’t have to get eyelash extensions.
I don’t have them. I I used to wear eyelashes all the time, and then I decided to stop wearing them, do my natural lashes. I just kind of change it up to whatever I’m feeling and whatever I feel good in. So you don’t have to go get the spray tans and do the eyelashes and the, and the fake hair color like People are kind of getting away from that now, which I think is so fun and cool that it changes, like different things change, you know, but if you want to get your eyelashes done and that’s what makes you feel confident, then do that.
Um, I know it can get expensive, but something I love doing every Sunday night is I love putting on my spray tan or go a good in the spray tan like once a week just really helps all my outfits look better. I swear. Um, and then I have pretty long natural hair. I also, I get two rows of extensions just for like fullness.
Um, and I’ve been playing around with extensions for a long time. I just really love long hair. It’s just like my favorite. Um, but you know, that’s something that you could put some highlights in and grow darker. All those things are so fun. Or you could not color your hair at all and like, Do a different hairstyle.
I’ve cut my hair before and had a lot of confidence when it was short. My husband actually loved that, but now I just, I love the long hair. I don’t know. I just changed my mind. So I, I like doing different types of things as far as like my hair, my tan, my lashes, my makeup, I just love changing it up. But at the end of the day, it’s just whatever helps you feel confident.
But grooming definitely can, like, I, I know. I just feel better when. My nails are a little painted or something like that. So Accessorizing is such a big deal. I always tell people Accessories make or break your outfit. So if you’ve ever seen like a grungy tee, you know, like wow, this is like a grungy tee Yeah, like grungy today or whatever graphic tees You put a gold necklace on with a graphic tee and you are going to look like high class.
You’re going to look so cool and trendy and you’re not going to look grungy at all. So it’s just so funny how much accessories really do dictate. They kind of, they kind of like show the outfit and really like dictate things, honestly. So just playing around with different accessories, it can really elevate your outfit.
You don’t have to buy designer accessories. I mean, there’s definitely some affordable options. I would say if you don’t know where to start a pair of gold hoops will really do wonders. I mean, even if i’m in like leggings and a sports tank if I have gold earrings on I am now like So sophisticated and I look so good So definitely, think about that.
I play around with a ton of different accessories, but some that I love are like headbands and sunglasses and obviously different styles of purses. Like right now I’m really into, you know, the straw like purses. So I change out my purses for each season. In the fall, it’s more leathers. In the spring and summer, it’s more like, you know, that basket looking material.
I forgot what it’s called, but accessories. You can really elevate the outfit, add a personal touch. So experiments with jewelry, scarves, love belts. I have all different kinds of belts for depending on the outfit. So like I have this one belt. It’s amazing that you should try to get it. black belt with a gold, buckle, but you can switch it.
It switches out from black to Brown. I got it from express. But it’s really, you will get a lot of use out of a black and Brown belt surprisingly, and it really does elevate the outfit. So all those things can really enhance your look and it can help boost your confidence. But at the end of the day, the most important thing is that you just wear what makes you feel good.
Okay. And we’re gonna go back to that. I know I’ve already preached that on that high horse, but honey, you wear whatever makes you feel good. So something I’ve noticed as I’ve like gotten older is like, I, I love one pieces, but for my body type, I’d rather wear a two piece. And that’s what I’m going to do.
I’m going to wear a two piece. I know I do like swimsuit reels because I feel confident. And those, and I love showing people swimsuits and showing people like, wear the swimsuit, put the swimsuit on this summer. Like we’re not doing that. We’re, we’re not going to be. If you’re ever around me personally, like about if we’re at the gym or eating lunch together and you try to say something like, I don’t like the way my body looks, I’m like, no, no, no.
Like your body’s beautiful. Like, I, it’s just so important for you to have a really positive relationship about what you’re wearing. And. You know how you’re showing up for the world like regardless of the trends or other people’s opinions I remember I wanted to get this pair of sandals sandals and I was like Are these is this trend going out?
Is this even a trend anymore? And someone told me who cares? And I was like, Oh my gosh. Yes. Yes. Wear what you want, what you feel confident in. Not what everybody else thinks. The funniest story. Okay. This was just like the other day I had a pair of sunglasses on and it’s not a style everybody likes, you know?
And so people kind of look at me weird or something. And I’ve had people, I haven’t walked in while, you know, like in a grocery store before. With this flowy long dress and I get a lot of stares sometimes people are like this girl is in a dress randomly On a Tuesday in a grocery store. Um, and you know what?
I don’t care. I feel good in it. And it’s funny. They stare at me cause I really don’t care because out of all those people that stare at me, there’s other people that give me compliments and I appreciate the ones that take their time just out of their day to stop and tell me how beautiful my dress is.
And I just love compliments, but honestly I just wear it cause I love it and it makes me feel good and it fits my body right. And so at the end of the day, It’s all about what you feel good in. If you want some more ideas on outfit ideas, kind of maybe, maybe you do want to try some new trends or something like that.
Make sure you’re following me on Instagram at abraidablond. I do show some really fun outfit ideas. I’ve been to New York fashion week and that’s been really cool getting to see the designers styling outfits. I love, like I said, I love styling outfits. It feels like. It feels like a masterpiece to me.
Every morning when I wake up. I feel like my outfit is a picture that I’m painting and I think it can be just beautiful and fun and show my personality to kind of think about it like that. Like, don’t be like, Oh, I’m getting dressed today. Like I get to get dressed today and wear a really cute outfit. So that’s just really something to think about.
But yeah, go over to a braided blonde and give me a follow. If you want to see some more outfit ideas, I also have an LTK. Um, So on the shop LTK app, you can find me at a braided blonde and you can get some fun outfit ideas there as well. But I want to see you rocking your favorite outfit.
